{"id":670,"date":"2025-05-16T05:23:21","date_gmt":"2025-05-16T05:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/datadandies.nl\/?p=670"},"modified":"2025-05-16T05:23:21","modified_gmt":"2025-05-16T05:23:21","slug":"data-engineering-understand-the-data-you-are-working-with-better-by-generating-test-records-in-the-source-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/datadandies.nl\/index.php\/2025\/05\/16\/data-engineering-understand-the-data-you-are-working-with-better-by-generating-test-records-in-the-source-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Data Engineering: understand the data you are working with better by generating test records in the source system"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am a firm believer in (at least on a global level) understanding the data you are working with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One way to do this is to generate testrecords in the source system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This offers several advantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only do you understand the data better which makes for better pipelines, it also forces you to communicate with stakeholders and understand their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding the needs of your stakeholders leads to you being able to develop a product that is better suited to their needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This in turn, leads to your data actually being used, instead of it rotting away in some database that was never touched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a Data Engineer it is very tempting to just \u201cdo the work\u201d: build a pipeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this does not always result in added value, nor does it result in job satisfaction.
